Sales Tax Return Filing

We file your monthly sales tax returns — federal GST on goods through FBR, and provincial sales tax on services through PRA, SRB, KPRA or BRA. One month or twelve, one province or four: figures are reconciled before anything is submitted, and the consultation is free.

GST & PST, untangled

Two sales tax systems, side by side

Pakistan does not have one sales tax. Goods are taxed federally, and services are taxed provincially — and the two systems do not replace each other.

SystemAuthority & portalWhat it coversWho files here
GST — federalFBR, through the IRIS portalTaxable goods, imports, manufacturing, wholesale and retail tradeManufacturers, importers, exporters, wholesalers, retailers and traders registered with FBR
PST — PunjabPunjab Revenue Authority (PRA), its own portalTaxable services rendered in PunjabService providers in Punjab — IT, restaurants, consultants, transporters and others on the provincial schedule

PST — BalochistanBalochistan Revenue Authority (BRA), its own portalTaxable services rendered in BalochistanService providers in Balochistan

Two consequences follow. If you sell goods and services, you may need both a federal and a provincial registration. And if you provide services in more than one province — a Lahore IT firm serving Karachi clients is the classic case — you must file in each province where the service is rendered.

You also need the right numbers. Income tax has the NTN; sales tax has the STRN. You get the NTN first, then the STRN — and an NTN alone is not enough on a sales tax invoice. Not registered yet? We handle registration first, then move you onto monthly filing.

The monthly maths, in plain words

How a sales tax return works

A monthly return is a summary of one month of your business, not just a payment form. It reports what you sold, what you bought, and the tax on both sides.

Output tax (on your sales) − Input tax (on your purchases) = Net tax payable

If tax paid on purchases is higher, the excess is carried forward as a credit — and for exporters and zero-rated suppliers, it can support a refund claim.

That subtraction is where most returns go wrong. Input tax can only be claimed on purchases from registered suppliers, backed by valid invoices and declared in the right annexures. Sales and purchases must reconcile — a return where they don't is exactly what gets picked up later.

Two more common mistakes. First, the nil month: with no sales or purchases, you still file a nil return. Skipping it creates a gap, and gaps push a registration towards inactive status, which blocks your input tax adjustment.

Second, the deadline pattern. For most registered persons, the month's tax is paid by the 15th of the following month and the return is filed by the 18th. Two separate steps, two separate dates — treating them as one deadline is a mistake we see often. Special categories can differ, and dates are sometimes extended by notification.

On rates: the standard federal rate is currently 18% for most goods. Provincial service rates differ by province and service, and change in provincial budgets. We apply the rate that fits your supply.

Who must file every month

If you are registered, the month does not skip itself

Once you hold a sales tax registration, filing is monthly — every month, good, bad or non-existent. This covers manufacturers, importers and exporters, wholesalers and distributors, retailers, and service providers on the provincial schedules: restaurants, IT firms, consultants, transporters and more.

Exporters and zero-rated dealers file too. Zero-rated does not mean exempt from filing, and it is zero-rated suppliers who most often have input credits to protect.

Some businesses register voluntarily, below the usual thresholds, to claim input tax on purchases. Unsure whether you must register? Turnover alone is not the whole test — message us and we will work it out from what you actually sell.

Documents

What to send us each month

Clear photos or scans on WhatsApp are fine. The first month needs your registration record; after that, just the month's own invoices and bank record.

First month / registration record

  • NTN and STRN details (and provincial registration, for services)
  • CNIC of proprietor, partners or directors
  • Business bank account details and recent statement
  • Business address proof — utility bill or lease agreement
  • Business registration documents (for companies and partnerships)
  • Description of your main goods or services supplied

Every month, for the return itself

  • Sales invoices issued during the month (sales annexure)
  • Purchase invoices for input tax claims — from registered suppliers only
  • Bank statement for the month, so figures reconcile
  • Debit and credit notes, if any were issued
  • Import documents, for importers
  • Any notice or letter received from FBR or a provincial authority
Monthly process

Same rhythm every month, handled for you

1

Free consultation

First time only, and free: we settle which authorities apply to you — FBR, PRA, SRB, KPRA, BRA, or several — and confirm your fee before filing starts.

2

Send the month's record

Each month, send your sales and purchase invoices and bank record on WhatsApp. We reconcile them first and flag anything that doesn't line up, before it reaches a portal.

3

Figures shown to you

You see the month's figures before submission: output tax, input tax, net payable or credit carried forward, and any payment due. Nothing is filed on figures you haven't seen.

4

Filed & confirmed

We file on FBR IRIS and/or the relevant provincial portals, arrange the payment challan (PSID) where tax is due, and share the filing acknowledgement as proof.

On "cheap monthly filing" offers. A return filed from figures nobody reconciled is cheap until the mismatch surfaces — blocked input tax, a notice, or an inactive registration. The monthly fee is the smallest part of this service; the reconciliation is the service.

Already registered? Start here

Check your filing status before you hand over a month

If you are already registered, with gaps in your filing, the first job is not the next return — it is finding out where you stand. Message us and we check, free, which months are filed and which are missing, whether your STRN and provincial registrations are active, and whether any notice sits against your record.

Missed months are then caught up in order, oldest first, with the fee and order confirmed before we start. A registration that drifted inactive over missed returns can usually be brought back — but only by filing the missing months, not by filing the current one and hoping the gap goes unnoticed.

Past returns can also be corrected. If a filed return has wrong figures, tell us what was filed and what is wrong, and we will advise whether it can be revised.

Coverage

Filed across Pakistan, including multi-province businesses

Returns are filed on the FBR and provincial portals, so there is no office visit and no city-dependent step. Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Hyderabad and every other city are served the same way, on WhatsApp — including businesses that need returns in more than one province at the same time.

Questions

Sales Tax Returns — Asked & Answered

What is the difference between GST and PST?

GST in the federal sense is sales tax on goods, administered by FBR under the Sales Tax Act, 1990. PST is provincial sales tax on services, run by PRA, SRB, KPRA and BRA. They run in parallel — a business dealing in both goods and services may need both.

Do I have to file even in a month with no sales?

Yes. Once registered, you file every month, including a nil return for a zero month. Skipping it creates a gap — and gaps push a registration towards inactive status, blocking your input tax adjustment.

When is a monthly return due?

For most registered persons: pay by the 15th of the following month, file by the 18th. Two separate steps, two separate dates. Special categories can differ, and authorities sometimes extend dates by notification.

I sell goods and provide services. One return or two?

Usually two tracks: a federal return for goods through FBR, and a provincial return for services through the relevant authority. Serve clients in more than one province, and you file in each one. Message us and we map your exact position first.

Can I claim tax paid on my purchases?

Yes, through input tax adjustment — but only on purchases from registered suppliers, backed by valid tax invoices and declared in your return's purchase records. Tax paid to an unregistered supplier, or on an invoice that doesn't reconcile, cannot be claimed.

I have missed several months. Can I catch up?

Yes. Missed months are filed in order, oldest first. We check your status and any notices before starting, so there are no surprises — and confirm the fee on WhatsApp first.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. We settle which authorities apply to you, check your filing status where possible, and confirm your service fee on WhatsApp before any filing work starts. If filing doesn't apply to your case, we say so.
